Scottish Control Game Across the Channel

With two wins from three in January, Scottish made their way to Jersey full of confidence. Jersey came into the game off the back of a narrow defeat in the Cup against the Pirates, so were looking to get back to winning ways in the league – confident they could secure a win at home as they haven’t lost here since the 16th February, 2018.

Scottish got off to a lightning start, and controlled the game from the outset. Just 11 minutes in, the Scots got on the scoreboard through Matt Eliet, who would go on to have a stand out performance. After a period of phases, Harding & Hart burst over the gain line, a dramatic try saving tackle the only thing preventing Hart getting all the way to the line. Scottish recycled the ball quickly, it went through the hands to Fowlie, who offloaded to Eliet on his shoulder who stepped the final defender to score. Jennings converted, LSFC 7-0 Reds.

Jersey soaked up the unrelenting attacking pressure well, and only conceded a penalty in the next ten minutes. 24 minutes in, the Reds over-threw a line out on their own 22m line, Harding was alert, scooped the ball up and shrugged off two defenders to score a superb individual try. Conversion was good, LSFC 17-0 Reds.

It remained 17-0 until Eliet picked up his second try of the game on the 43rd minute. Scottish moved the ball well through the hands, each player offloading in the tackle to the man on his shoulder deep in the Reds 22, until Eliet stepped his man to score. Another conversion, LSFC 24-0 Reds with just over half an hour to play.

The Reds started making changes to their team immediately, but it would take another 10 minutes to pay off. From a 5m line out, Jersey were finally able to use their set-piece effectively, and carried over the line. MacFarlane the man with the ball, conversion from Herron. LSFC 24-7 Reds with 20 to go.

Scottish’s line speed was so quick, the Reds could just not get going, and made a huge number of errors under pressure in the final 20 minutes; Mantella refusing to give their wingers an inch of space in the channels. However, just seconds from time, Jersey used their trusty set-piece again. A 5m line out was bundled up to the try line, a couple of phases later Best hurtled over the line to score. Herron converted again, LSFC 24-14 Red. Full Time.

Scottish were outstanding, and will feel bitterly disappointed that they let Jersey score after taking a 24-0 lead. Stand out performances again from Wynne, Harding, Eliet and Tyas in the centre of the pitch, and Man of the Match, Rory Jennings.
