Scottish left to rue ill-discipline

Scottish left to rue ill-discipline

After the Beast from the East claimed another victim a couple of weekends back and forced the game between Hartpury and London Scottish to be rearranged. This weekend the two sides met at the Gillman’s Ground.

This was a vital match between two sides who found themselves perilously close to the foot of the Greene King IPA Championship, a win for either side would go a long way to securing Championship survival ahead of next season.

The weather was much better than the week before and there was not even a remote sign of snow but heavy overnight rain and drizzle during the game lead to a less-expansive game than many had hoped for and expected. It was a tussle and two gritty performances from both forward packs.

The game started slowly with both teams battling for possession and territory in the wet conditions. Perry, Atkins and Mosses were looking to turn their respective opposition with tactical kicks trying to force the other into mistakes. Both teams held firm and the game remained 0-0 for 15 minutes.

It was on the 15 minute mark that Jacob Perry slotted the first points for Hartpury. London Scottish gave a penalty about 35 metres out in front of the sticks. Shortly after Perry had another, even easier opportunity, to double the lead for the hosts. Scottish’s penalty count was now starting to build, this time Matt Eliet was sent to the sin bin for a tip tackle. Perry made the scores 6-0 to Hartpury after 25 minutes.

Two Jacob Atkins penalties managed to even up the scores for the Scots who were still in the game despite making it hard work for themselves with their penalty count. Pury 6 – 6 Scottish ater 35 minutes.

Scottish were shooting themselves in the foot throughout the first half, they would build some pressure in the Hartpury half but give the hosts a soft penalty and Pury would clear their lines.

Just before the half time mark, relentless pressure and countless needless penalties from the Scots, finally told. Following two driving mauls and a couple of minutes of pick & go rugby close to the line, Hartpury flung the ball wide to Mike Wilcox who was in acres of space to dive over in the corner for Hartpury. The conversion was missed.

Half Time. Hartpury 11 – 6 London Scottish

Despite the coaches’ stern words at half time surrounding discipline, Scottish’s Achilles heel struck again within 5 minutes of the second half. Scottish were pinned for not rolling away at the breakdown. Perry duly slotted the kick and made the score 14 – 6 after 45 minutes.

The next 20 minutes were fought out between the two sides as Hartpury looked to close out the game whereas Scottish were chasing another tight game and trying to avoid another defeat.

It was in the 65th minute when Scottish got their next points on the board. The build up began on halfway as multiple phases and forward pressure lead to some space wide. Ross Neal managed to release himself for only the second time in the game, he found Craig Holland who drew the last man and fired a pass wide to Ealing Trailfinders loanee Llewellyn Jones who crashed over in the corner. Atkins could not add the extras so the scores were Hartpury 14 – 11 Scottish.

This is how the score remained until the final whistle. Hartpury’s experienced bench of Ian Grieve and Rhys Oakley closed the game out by slowing the game right down. Not allowing Scottish any chance to close the three point gap.

This was a very evenly contested game between two sides of similar ability but Scottish produced a fragmented performance with their always increasing penalty count and silly errors at the breakdown.

This weekend Scottish face a stern challenge as they welcome Jersey Reds to the RAG for yet another encounter.
