London Scottish are delighted to announce their second and final inductee to the Hall of Fame this year. Ian Smith will join an illustrious cohort
Ian grew up idolising London Scottish, watching the Exiles win Melrose sevens tournaments in the sixties. After successful playing seasons with Edinburgh University, Ian travelled down to London and joined the Club in 1969.
Whilst not yet selected for the London Scottish 1st XV, Ian played against the Scottish national side for the Combined Services XV. An impressive display from Ian led to a call-up to face the Springboks the next week.
Winning the match 6-3, Ian became the first Scottish full back to score a try in an international and kicked a drop goal. Ian had gone from the London Scottish 3rds through to a cap for the Scottish national side in a fortnight!
Ian went on to claim eight caps for Scotland playing alongside the likes of British and Irish Lions Gordon Connell, Sandy Hinshelwood, and Ali Biggar in the backline. A truly deserving London Scottish legend rightly takes his place in the Hall of Fame.
