On Sunday, the Under 13s welcomed Hertford RFC to the Richmond Athletic Ground. The game started briskly with some good end to end rugby until a gap was spotted by Hertford on our wing and we were 0-1 try down.
We were not worried as this followed a familiar pattern. We reset and began a period of sustained pressure which led to Mark DS breaking across the tryline to even the scores. Another quick run and we were ahead 2-1.
The boys drew breath and settled into a period of intense play from Hertford with play edging inexorably towards the tryline. A fabulous intercept from Marko and a good punt down the field from Max turned the play and Mark DS was over the line again for a 3-1 lead at half time.
As the second half began, Scottish made some substitutions with Max, Jaime, Lucas and Sam, a new player to the U13s, coming on.
Both teams were more cagey but suddenly Max got the ball, put his head down and in a display of committed running, sprinted from the halfway line to score. We were 4-1 up! A moment’s inattention and a big gap on the wing let Hertford back in with a score. It was now 4-2.
Hertford were trying hard and time was ticking away. They won the scrum and headed for the corner but it was not to be. Last play and they again took the scrum close to the line but a committed display of textbook low tacking from Jaime took their player into touch and the game was over. After two recent losses it was good to be back winning. Final score 4-2 to Scottish.
