Treat friends or family to a ticket to a festive feast of rugby at Twickenham as the women’s and men’s rugby teams from Oxford and Cambridge Universities go head-to-head on Thursday 6 December.
Played since 1872 and held at the home of England Rugby since December 1921, The Varsity Match is once again set to turn the hallowed turf two shades of blue, as the women and men from Oxford and Cambridge Universities do battle in this iconic clash.
Last year’s Varsity Matches saw a double victory for Cambridge, with the women claiming a 0-24 Light Blue triumph over Oxford before the Cambridge men secured back-to-back Varsity victories with a 10-20 win over their Dark Blue rivals to lift The Rhino Trophy.
Former Cambridge student and recent London Scottish Hall of Fame inductee Jeremy Macklin spoke highly of Scottish’s link with the prestigious university. “The very reason that I came to London Scottish was because of the close connection between the Club and Cambridge University. At the time the two Clubs had the same culture of deep commitment and a playing style which favoured running rugby. It was also a Club where former Oxford and Cambridge players came together and buried their animosity to play some of the best rugby in the country at that time. We would be delighted to welcome supporters from the Club who bring a friend with the special 2 for 1 discount.
London Scottish has been home to many former Oxford and Cambridge students including Mike Campbell Lamerton, Gavin Hastings, Sandy Pratt, Angus Stewart, Mike Biggar, Alastair Morrison, Stephen Pearson, Tim Patterson-Brown, Niall MacBain
With 136 men’s matches played and Cambridge leading Oxford 63 – 59, and Oxford leading Cambridge 19 – 12 in the women’s match, this rich rivalry is alive and as close fought as ever.
