Wednesday 22nd May is the date for this year’s golf match against Royal Mid-Surrey GC
Teams meet at 3.30pm with the first match teeing off at 4.00pm in Pairs, Handicap & Matchplay. The venue ranks amongst the Top 100 Golf Courses in England and our match is one of the oldest to be played there over the last 125 years. Donald Mungall, stalwart Scottish supporter and team captain for the RM-S GC golfers who play against us, has arranged that, given the increased interest in LSFC golf events, an extra match can be added to allow a total of 24 golfers to play – which means that we should have a place for everyone who is available.
Last year was very encouraging for LSFC golf – 14 golfers played in their first events including 9 squad players/coaches; we also now have 3 lady golfers too!
Whilst our golfing group comprises all levels, with handicaps from 4 to 24, sporting attitude, camaraderie and bonhomie is equally important. Given the dual golf/rugby memberships of many players, golfers are often transferred to balance up the teams; so much so, that after a little post-match sustenance few people can remember if they played in the winning team – and, even fewer care.
Regrettably, golf team captain, Jared Saunders, is away at a wedding. Thankfully for him he didn’t fall for the innocent enquiry of, “Oh never mind, where’s the reception?” and condemn himself to the LSFC golf team and half Royal Mid-Surrey GCs’ members arriving there to talk him through their golf rounds – in real time.

Match Report – Jersey 8th February – written by Lance Quantrill
Our first LSFC golf outing didn’t go well in Jersey. We failed to win even one match at La Moye GC; but the course was in excellent condition, the welcome in the clubhouse warm and the win by 24 pts to 14 the following day at Stade Santander made for a great trip.
Man-of-the-Match award went to Stuart Fenton. Normally a solid golfer with an enviable record of never having lost in this away event over the last 10 years, Stuart went down by a “dog license”. For those who don’t recall old money, such a canine registration cost 7 shillings and 6 pence; 7 down with 6 holes to play being the margin by which Stuart lost (for non-golfers, the most by which anyone can lose is 10 down and 8 to play!). In his defence Stuart offered all sorts of ingenious reasons: rented clubs, early start, delayed flight, hangover – all were received with great understanding and heartfelt empathy by fellow LSFC golfers who all responded with a hearty reply of “Woof Woof”.
