In just over two weeks time we will be inducting three more London Scots in to the Hall of Fame, with David Howells being recognised for his memorable career.
Born in Pembury in Kent on the 20th May 1988, David Howells had a distinguished rugby career as a winger. Educated at Millfield School in Somerset, David enjoyed success at schoolboy level, winning successive National Schools 7’s titles and playing in a Daily Mail Cup final before representing England at U19 level, and later England Counties.
In 2006 David was signed by London Irish out of school where he spent two seasons. He also played for Ealing Trailfinders where he had a record breaking 2008-09 season, scoring the most tries in the National League that year, before joining London Scottish in 2009.
During his four years at London Scottish, he made 71 appearances and scored 40 tries – and indeed, finished as the top try-scorer in National League One in 2010/11 with a total of 24.
The try for which he will be best remembered, however, was on Saturday 7th May 2011 at Goresbrook when London Scottish snatched victory from the jaws of defeat to win 13-17 against Barking in the winner takes all National League One title decider. Barking had performed superbly throughout the match until an unforced error by the Barking backs in the closing minutes of the game allowed David Howells to pounce gleefully on a wayward pass and race 90m down the pitch to score between the posts and secure the victory.
After leaving London Scottish, David joined Besso Limited, a Lloyd’s of London Broker, where he worked within their International Division for 2 years, before moving to assist with the newly established Besso Re Middle East Division in Dubai, in 2015, where he continues to work.
