During the October half term break the Richmond Athletic Ground played host to over 40 children as London Scottish hosted another successful rugby camp.
The camp was run over three days from Tuesday 27th October to Thursday 29th October which allowed young aspiring rugby players, aged 6 – 16, the chance to touch up on their rugby skills during the school holiday.
The camp focused on all round player development coaching through fundamentals of the game such as Hand Catch, Individual Tackle Technique, Offload and Ball Presentation, as well as conditioning tips and a number of small sided games.
On the last day of the camp excitement levels were raised when the players were provided an opportunity to work with Ex England Woman's International and World Cup Winner, Maggie Alphonsi and Ex Aviva Premiership star Andy Goode in a coaching masterclass on the 1st XV pitch at the Athletic Ground.
The Thursday afternoon session consisted of four stations that players from the London Scottish camp rotated round allowing them to work with both Maggie and Andy as well as players and coaches from England Touch. After an hours coaching session, players then took their seat in the grandstand where they had the opportunity ask both Maggie and Andy questions about their rugby careers before taking to the field again for one last photo opportunity.
Community Development Manager Ross Peacock was delighted with the success of the October camp. “The camp has been a huge success. We had disappointing numbers attend the summer camp so it's been great to have had over 40 kids attend the camp over the last 3 days.
Excitement levels have been building over the duration of the camp at the prospect of working with and being coached by two ex professionals and there is a great buzz around the camp today. Both Maggie and Andy have been absolutely fantastic with the kids and I'm sure that it's a moment that all of these youngsters will treasure for the rest of their lives!”
We caught up with Senior Community Coach Cameron Leigh who gave us his thoughts on the camp:
“I thoroughly enjoy coaching during the rugby camps, it's great to see so many youngsters down at the ground during their school holidays sharpening up their skills. You only have to look as far as the excitement levels today to see how much the guys have enjoyed themselves this week – smiles all round.”
The next London Scottish holiday rugby camp will be held at the Athletic Ground during the February half term running from Tuesday 16th February – Thursday 18th February 2016.
