Mantella – Second Half Sends Out Message To Rivals

Miles Mantella feels the second-half performance against Yorkshire Carnegie yesterday sends out a message to the rest of the Championship, after four tries in a 27-minute spell gave London Scottish an impressive 26-22 win over Yorkshire Carnegie.

Scottish trailed 8-0 at the break and 15-7 to the Leeds outfit early in the second half but an impressive display sent them back up to third in the table behind Bristol and Worcester Warriors with tries from Mark Bright, Chevvy Pennycook, Peter Lydon and James Phillips.

“We showed great character in the second half,” Mantella said.

“We said at half-time that we had to play with intensity and we certainly did that.

“Everyone bought into the type of game we wanted to play and we showed that we can rip teams apart if we play to that level.”

The 24-year-old continued: “We're really pleased with the result, it’s a great five points but it’s more about the manner of how we played which was much better.”

The conditions played a huge part, with howling winds making kicking a problem throughout the match but Mantella was pleased with how the side coped.

“We couldn’t kick much at all,” he said.

“It limited our options but in each match you assess the conditions and we all adapted to playing a different style.

“We got stuck in and apart from gifting them a try in the last minute there aren’t too many complaints at all.”

Scottish face Cornish Pirates on Friday night at Richmond Athletic Ground, 7.45pm kick-off, a match that Mantella is already looking forward to and one that can put the Scots in an even better position in their quest to finish in the top-four.

The winger added: “If we can carry that second half into training this week and then push on again against the Pirates we’ll be in good shape for the win.

“We want to put together a proper 80 minute performance.”
