PJ Gidlow – We Must Raise Our Game

20th September 2014

PJ Gidlow says that London Scottish will use their 36-30 win over Bedford Blues as a wake-up call for the rest of the season.

Scottish started impressively and had the try bonus point wrapped up in the first half thanks to tries from Matt Williams, Mark Bright, Gidlow himself and Jamie Stevenson.

However a 36-20 lead after 62 minutes was swiftly cut to just six points and very nearly turned into the first defeat of the season but for some courageous last-ditch defence.

Gidlow said: “It turned out to be a tougher day than it should have been.

“We started well but in the second half we made way too many individual errors with knock-ons, missed tackles and turnovers that were unacceptable.”

The result leaves Scottish at the top of the Greene King IPA Championship table with a maximum 15 points but Gidlow warned that other teams will go all out to beat the leaders.

He added: “The pressure is always going to be on us, teams are targeting us as we are at the top so we have to be on our game at all times.”

Scottish next head to Bristol on Friday night in what promises to be a tough battle.

“It will be a massive test and it will be good to see where we are at as a team.” the Samoan said.

“We will have to turn up and be better than we were today, and play like we did in the first half. If we don’t it will be a long night.”

The 34-year-old led the team out this afternoon to celebrate his 50th appearance for the club, and he saw it as a huge honour to get over the try line on such a landmark day.

He said: “It’s always a proud moment to play for this club and it’s a great achievement that I’m very proud of.

“To get the try capped it off, I was luckily in the right place at the right time.”
