Golfers See Off Richmond To Secure Local Bragging Rights

Inspired by their recent victory over Royal Mid-Surrey GC the London Scottish golf team whitewashed Richmond RFC in this year’s annual golf match.

Last Friday, June 20, saw idyllic playing conditions at Royal Mid-Surrey GC and all four matches took full advantage to demonstrate their skills at both golf and competitive matchplay.

Club President Rod Lynch captained the side and, with Gareth Evans, teed off as the first pair.

Their 3 up and 2 to play win was shortly followed by Norrie Jackson and John Hewitt returning a 2 and 1 result which meant that, with four matches playing, the worst overall result could be a draw.

However, since Richmond had won the previous encounter another win was needed before the coveted shield would on its way to the Scottish trophy cabinet.

The shield has its own history as a replica of the one in the Rugby Museum at Twickenham which is the original trophy for the oldest golf competition played between two rugby clubs, London Scottish and Richmond, in the world.

Next back, after being 2 down with 9 holes to play, stalwarts Alastair McHarg and Sandy McIver delivered the desired overall victory with a win in their match.

This made academic the result from the last group still battling out on the course and most golf teams would have sent a messenger out to share the news.

And, there were plenty. Playing reserves Miles Mantella, Lance Quantrill, Tony Devlin and Bill Foster had just completed their friendly game and any one of them could have sprinted out to relieve the tension.

But, the sandwiches had just appeared in the bar and were much more appealing so Bruce Law and David Plastow were left to fight out their 3 and 1 victory in the last match.

The next golf event is the Summer Meeting on Friday 18th July from 5pm at Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club.

Please note that if you played for the Club in the 2013/14 season then you are eligible for the Players' Tankard as well as the main trophy.
