Championship State of Play

The Championship returns this Friday night as London Scottish take on Cornish Pirates down in Penzance after a near two-month hiatus. Get to grips with all the storylines and the drama as the Exiles look to reestablish themselves in the final ten games of the season.

The Table

London Scottish sit seventh in the Championship table before the break having gone on a run of three victories either side of new year, downing Chinnor, Cambridge and Hartpury to climb to five wins this season. They take on Cornish Pirates this Friday night in a mid table clash which could see the Exiles climb into the top half of the table, however, a loss would se the likes of Doncaster and Ampthill look to ascend the table.

At the Top

Ealing lead the pack in the Championship by 13 points from Bedford Blues having lost just one game all season. Closely behind the Blues follow Coventry who started the season so strongly and led the way for much of the opening stages of the season. However, a few losses around Christmas has seen them drop into third.

Ealing resume their campaign away to Doncaster, the only side to defeat the Trailfinders this campaign. Whilst Coventry will look to get back on track against Cambridge at the Butts Park Arena. Second placed Bedford, however, will travel to Hartpury who have climbed to fifth place in the table as they look to keep the pressure up on the front runners.

At the Bottom

Down at the foot of the table, the sides have the comfort of knowing that their will be no relegation to National 1 this season and therefore can play with more freedom. This should give the sides above them something to worry about as the likes of Caldy, Cambridge and Chinnor look to turn their season around.

Cambridge and Chinnor both missed out on Premiership Cup participation this year and thus have had two months without a competitive fixture, whilst for the other sides it has been just over a month. Both will have used their time to try and consolidate to climb up the table in the latter portion of the season.

As mentioned Cambridge face an unenviable journey to Coventry this weekend whilst Chinnor host Caldy. Chinnor will be looking to turn their season back around after a stunning start to the campaign but one that fell away over the Christmas period. Whilst Caldy started slowly and have started to come into some form and will be looking to build on that as the year comes to a close.
