London Scottish flanker Tommy Spinks says he will relish the ‘incredible challenge’ of captaining Scotland during this summer’s IRB Junior World Championship in New Zealand.
The Scots are in Group C alongside Samoa, South Africa and hosts New Zealand, with their opening match on June 2 against the Junior Springboks at the QBE Stadium, Auckland.
The national squad got together for the first time last week since the Six Nations and head coach Sean Lineen confirmed his 28 man squad for the Junior World Championship which Spinks will captain.
Last year Scotland finished 10th at the tournament and Spinks knows his side will have to perform at their very best to improve on that this summer.
He said: “If we are going to leave Scotland in a better place we will have to perform at our absolute best.
“It is not going to be easy playing Samoa, South Africa and the hosts New Zealand but I cannot wait.
“It is a massive life experience as well as an incredible rugby challenge to go to New Zealand and play in a World Cup and we are going to be playing the best rugby nations in the world.”
He continued: “For myself I targeted the captaincy at this World Cup a couple of years ago and it’s a huge honour and something I will relish.
“New Zealand is the toughest place to go and play rugby but what an amazing place to host a World Cup.
“They have fantastic facilities and supporters and it’s a great opportunity for the squad to go out and promote Scottish rugby and do the country proud.”
