The Highlanders returned to winning ways at the weekend securing a 36-10 win over Tonbridge.

This score line reflected the Highlanders' dominance against Tonbridge although a number of points were left on the field.

The difference to previous performances was the Highlanders looked in control for most of the game and even when they dropped their intensity it was not enough to let Tonbridge any foothold in the match.

A fantastic start resulted in a try 24 seconds into the game.

From this point the pattern of the half was set Highlanders on the front foot and Tonbridge defending with a continual doggedness that remained throughout the game.

Three further tries were scored in the first half one from a forward drive finished after the maul was pulled down and a try a piece for the half backs.

The Highlanders showed how dynamic they were running from wide and both forwards and backs found the gain line behind them on a number of occasions.

However the ball created from this situation needs to be much more valued. Too often isolated players gave possession and penalties to Tonbridge. Ball presentation being a key term identified at half time.

A Tonbridge try was scored before the break after our defending lineout was tapped down instead of secured with Tonbridge first to react.

The second half lacked the intensity of the first but Highlanders found a different method of returning Tonbridge deep into their own half.

All the subs came on to great effect and were the catalyst for most of the good play through out the second half.

A try scored by Tonbridge was a lesson on how you can caused problems giving away repeated penalties and field positions.

However man of the match Luke Thompson secured the win for the Highlanders with quick thinking and feet after exposing lack of cover at a line out making the corner from a 40m run.

The Highlanders continued to press with kicks into the right corner.

Pressure from waves of chasers meant it was only a matter of time before the Highlanders would score again.

Ultimately the ref decided the next score with a penalty try awarded.

After a break in the outside channel the Tonbridge cover defense held back the supporting Highlanders enough that the ref felt he had no option but to take himself under the posts.

The Highlanders are starting to find their feet and turning potential into reality.

An exciting brand of rugby is on offer but on too many occasions brilliance needs to be matched with being more pragmatic towards retaining possession and adding to the phases already completed.

The Highlanders will be buoyed by this win and rightly so all players added to the overall team effort and it was by far a much more completed and controlled performance

The Highlanders travel to East Grinstead this Saturday and hope to continue to build on this win.
