The Highlanders had their first competitive outing in the pre-season cup at Grasshoppers RFC on the hottest day of the year so far (Saturday 18th August).
With many newcomers in the squad, coach Corne du Rand and returning captain James Buncle faced a steep challenge to blend the team together quickly against established league teams in the 20 minute game format.
The lads opened against Windsor with great spirit and some stylish rugby, but went down 0-12. Next up were Aylesford Bulls – Christian Hockin opened the Scottish account with a penalty kick, but the game was eventually lost 3-12.
In the third game against London Nigerians, Scottish had most of the play but just failed to get that winning score, losing out 0-3. The best was saved for last, coming from behind with a well-deserved try from Luke Thomson against hosts Grasshoppers to win 7-5.
