Former Scotland internationalist Chris Paterson dropped in on first team training earlier this week to pass on his vast knowledge of the game, accumulated during an international career spanning 12 years.

Paterson won 109 caps for his country and now works as a specialist coach and ambassador for the SRU.

Acclaimed as one of the most accurate goal-kickers in the game, Paterson spent time working with stand-offs Dan Newton and Lee Millar during Monday’s training session.

Paterson played for Gala early in his career as did Millar who joined London Scottish from the Borders club last summer.

The 35-year-old Paterson said: “It was a good chance for Lee and Dan to pick my brains and chat through a few technical things and discuss game management.

“They are both really good talents.

“I’ve watched Lee a couple of times play for Gala, my hometown club, and I played against Dan when he was at the Scarlets.

“Both are at similar stages in their development and I’m really looking forward to seeing how they progress.”

He added: “I also worked on counter attacking and kicking strategies with the rest of the back division. It was a busy but enjoyable day.”

Former Gala fly-half Millar was understandably thrilled to have Paterson down for the session.

He said: “Chris is a really nice guy.

“Dan and I sat and had lunch with him during a break from training and being able to talk things over with someone with his experience is great.”

Newton added: “We worked on small things like ball drops and kicking techniques out of hand, which can make a big difference during a game.”
