During the 2017/18 season all Aviva Premiership and Greene King IPA Championship clubs will take part in a ground-breaking study, in conjunction with Birmingham University, looking into concussions.
The aim of the study is to help construct a revolutionary test to diagnose for concussions and brain injury pitch side.
This test will aim to assist return to play decisions and in the long run could be transferable across sports.
The study, lead by Professor Tony Belli, will analyse urine and saliva samples given by all players. Dr Simon Kemp, RFU Chief Medical Officer said that “while very much an exploratory piece of research, this is a project that has the potential to make a very significant impact on the diagnosis and management of players following concussion.”
