Coming up against full time opposition in the Premiership Cup was always going to be a tall order for many Championship sides. And although we have seen many admirable performances and even a few upsets, every now and then the Premiership sides are simply unstopable.
That was the case this weekend as three time European champions Saracens looked to avenge a defeat last weekend when London Scottish game to town. Saracens came with an all court game that was largely based around their strong forward pack.
Powering over London Scottish at set-piece this allowed the driving maul to become a major factor in the game. Scottish ill discipline and inaccuracy did not help the Exiles’ cause, in many ways fueling the fire for Saracens to run in close to 100 points on the day.
That’s not to say there were no positives to take from the day for Scottish. Young gun Josh Bellamy continue to impress at full back under tricky conditions and scored a lovely try in the corner. Stephen Kerins’ return from injury progressed nicely with a strong cameo in the final few minutes. Robbie McCallum also looked industrious and made a lovely break for a Dan Nutton try in the first half.
Overall, though a day to forget for the Exiles. All the plaudits must go to Saracens who put in a clinical and impressive display. London Scottish now have the unenviable task of back to back weeks against Ealing, a reaction will be required and no doubt will come from this squad.
