Man-of-the-match Matt Williams was delighted with yesterday’s historic win over Nottingham Rugby and says the club can now look upwards having reached the Greene King IPA Championship play-offs for the very first time.
The winger was devastating in attack and solid defensively as Scottish eventually secured a 34-29 win over their top-four rivals.
The result now means that the Scots can’t be caught in third and Williams sees it as a pivotal moment for the club.
He said: “We’ve all been building towards this and shows what a good position the club are now in.
“We’ve had a great season and the aim is to keep the progression going.”
Scottish trailed 10-22 at half-time and faced a huge task to complete the come-from-behind victory.
But following first half tries from Peter Lydon and Williams – Mark Bright's brace, a try of the season contender from Matt Hawke and Kiwi Kieran Moffat's first try for Scottish sealed the dramatic turnaround.
The 26-year-old Williams admits that it must have been tough for the crowd to watch and was relieved to get the win with tricky away fixtures to come.
“Everyone knew we needed to get that win today,” he said.
“Not for the first time this season, we made it hard for ourselves but in that second half we came out really strong and it was great to get the result that everyone associated with the club wanted.”
Director of Rugby Mike Friday was elated and extremely proud of everyone at the club for securing their place in the top-four.
“It has been an Incredible Journey and this is the next step,” he said.
“I’m immensely proud of everyone who works so hard on and off the pitch.
“It’s been an emotional season and the game typified all of it!”
He continued: “It’s an unbelievable story and I would like to credit two guys who have been at the forefront of the rise.
“Rod Lynch has been there from the start and his resilience and leadership has been crucial, along with Sir David Reid.
“The club wouldn’t be where they are today without these guys, the rest of the Board members, our loyal sponsors and fans.
“Let’s hope we can push on even further.
“The closer to the top you get the harder it is but we are all delighted at the moment with this latest achievement.”
