With 11 rounds left in the season ‘do or die’ feels hyperbolic but when it comes to a relegation dog fight and an 13th plays 14th fixture perhaps not. Setting the context, London Scottish had lost five points to local rival Richmond last weekend owing to a statement win from the West London side. Cambridge then travelled to the RAG having avoided defeat for the first time this season last weekend meaning the gap between the two sides was just nine points.
A defeat for Scottish and it could be ten points between themselves and Richmond and just four between the Exiles and Cambridge. However, the win they got pulls them level again with Richmond and 14 points clear of Cambridge.
Things started fast for Scottish building pressure and territory which led to their first try. A well worked maul score from Harry Clayton supported by nearly the whole squad.
Quick thinking by full back Josh Bellamy linking up for the second score minutes later was a touch of class. The full back took the penalty quickly, kicking across pitch to find an unmarked Guy Rogers on the wing who would score his first try for the Club on debut.
Cambridge fought back into it hard though, their scrum became dominant and Osman Dimen spent time in the bin. This got the away side within just five points of Scottish before a final minute penalty from Josh Bellamy gave them a cushion to make the score 13-5 at the break.
The second half was a tense affair as Scottish failed to find that killer edge to get clear of their opponents whilst Cambridge doggedly stayed in the fight. A brilliant piece of individual brilliance from Guy Rogers again saw him go in from 40m for his second of the day and extend the lead.
However, with just ten minutes on the clock, Cambridge hit back to go within 10 points as they dived on the loose ball to score in the corner after a kick through.
This seemed to ignite the Scots though as they found that killer instinct and put in a lovely kick for Noah Ferdinand to dive on in the corner to kill the game.
A five point win was almost necessary today but certainly a big statement from the Scots. They now travel to Cornish Pirates next weekend looking to keep the pressure on and picking up points.
