Scottish Fall Short in Eighty Point Thriller

London Scottish travelled to Coventry looking to finish their season with four straight victories. If results went their way they could have finished as high as seventh position in the table. However, a dogged Coventry team buoyed by home support were able to get the job done despite a right old fright from the Exiles.

Scottish started the game under the cosh and into the wind, unable to get out of their half in the opening minutes Coventry capitlised. Bundling over from short range the home side took the lead.

The Exiles fought back manfully though and through a stunning driving maul, hooker Austin Wallis flopped over for the score. Soon after, scrum half Dan Nutton would get on the end of a lovely Robbie McCallum break up the middle to give the Exiles the lead.

Coventry hit back with one of their own but as the half came to a close, full back Josh Bellamy regathered his own grubber kick on the right hand side to dot down for a beautiful score.

After the break, Scottish almost picked up their bonus point try after a lovely break from captain Nutton. However, Coventry managed to scramble and regather posession.

Ill discipline from the Scots coupled with greater accuracy from the hosts saw Coventry begin to turn to the screw on the game. Scoring two tries from short range, Coventry secure they bonus point. However, another Austin Wallis score got Scottish back in touch at 28-24.

However, Coventry hit the after burners in the final 15 minutes scoring a further four tries to end Scottish’s chances of a famous away win. A late Matt Gribbon try put some gloss on the scoreline on what was an admirable performance from the Exiles. However, Coventry ran away deserved winners in the end as the season came to a close.
