Director of Rugby Simon Amor keeps us up to speed on the latest happenings from Hong Kong with his third blog entry from tour.
Yesterday the team played our invitational fixture against the Hong Kong Football Club Invitational XV. British and Irish Lions prop Adam Jones has been quoted as describing the heat and humidity here in Hong Kong as “horrific” and the conditions were certainly tough last night.
The game proved to be a good competitive contest with our opponents fighting consistently throughout the 80 minutes and playing some good rugby. To come out winners with a 43-26 victory was very pleasing.
Due to the humidity the ball was more slippery than a bar of soap so to score 6 tries was excellent and our new signings all showed great touches with fly-half Dan Newton fully deserving his man of the match award. There is plenty to work on as a group but this was a good start to our forthcoming season.
The post game dinner was an enthusiastic event which included a Q&A with Sir Ian McGeechan, Gavin Hastings and recent Scotland International Graeme Morrison. This gave everyone a real insight into the the Lions and what makes it so special.
The emotion coming from Sir Ian McGeechan when talking about the Lions was inspiring and it was great for all to hear from both Gavin Hastings and Graeme Morrison on the value that tours can have on creating a strong team spirit – the key to any successful team.
Having worked hard throughout the match the team had a night out together and you could get a real sense of the Lions game coming up as more and more supporters arrive in HK.
Then it was back up this morning to attend our next CSR event with Scotland International & British & Irish Lion Tom Smith's charity 'Enlighten', which looks to raise awareness of epilepsy.
As our tour begins to wind itself down, tomorrow we look forward to attending the Lions v Barbarians game at Hong Kong Stadium. With the talent on display, it should be a fantastic game.
