Under 12s enjoy success on tour to Wales

The Under 12s arrived at Pencoed Rugby Club for their last matches as minis. Two games were to be played v Baddau and Pencoed and the boys were to play 15 a side (normally 13) and slightly different rules and on a full size pitch for the first time.

First up Baddau RFC U12s, piped on by Jim the Piper,  the boys soon worked out, that getting the ball wide was the way forward and quick hands and fast wingers ensured we were four tries up, before conceding a late try to a far bigger pack from close distance. Not at our best at the breakdown but we won 26-7, against a decent and competitive outfit with four very good team tries.

Next, the hosts Pencoed, who looked a formidable team, however once again with the sound of the bagpipes echoing in the valleys, the boys ran onto the pitch determined to end the season in style, clearly inspired by the pipes, the team started brightly and very quick ball to our winger saw a run in from the half way line, a great start, a brilliant try.

Both sides then tried to get the ball wide into the space, a very good score from the hosts out wide, in response another great try from Scottish as our centre broke clear in mid field on the half way line.

Pencoed fought back, two more from the Welsh as our tackles were far too high out wide and the defence lost discipline. But we came back as we do…One bit of magic a break, a chip, the gather, the off load to our rampaging flanker – under the posts 19-22 behind with minutes left.

A penalty, a drive, our second row hit the ball at pace and ran into the heart of the Welsh in their 22, somehow he ran through the entire pack to score beneath the posts, outstanding, the conversion good and we had won  26-22 against possibly the strongest side we had played all season.

What a way to finish, the boys played very well, it was a team effort, we looked like a team, we played like a team, we fought like a team and we celebrated as a team. The boys have worked hard all season and won their last 8 games giving us great momentum into next season…

Please come and join us next season,  get in contact with Ralph at ralph.eley@hotmail.co.uk – we are looking for new players to build on a great season.
