After a succession of sunny Sundays, we were greeted with some good old fashioned rugby weather for the LS minis festival last weekend.
A strong squad was selected for the development B team and all members turned up fully prepared for the inclement weather.
We were drawn to face Harlequins, Old Whitgiftians, Old Ruts and Emmanuel. Game one, in the rain, saw us line up against a strong ‘Quins VI who were quick out of the blocks and established an early lead. Determined play from the Scottish team saw us get back into the game and it ended in a narrow 7-5 defeat with all team members contributing,
Game two, in slowly improving conditions, vs Old Whitgiftians was another close affair which we again lost by a small margin but it was evident that the team was finding it’s groove.
A half hour break between games allowed the team to sugar load and they played with real energy in game 3 against Old Ruts which ended in a well contested draw.
The final game against, an experienced (to quote their coach), Emmanuel side saw the best performance of the day and we managed to bag ourselves another draw.
All of the squad contributed brilliantly on the day. Monty showed some great running skills and also laid his body on the line to make some last ditch tags. Jesse was excellent at the breakdowns and showed some impressive handling skills. Charlie’s pace frightened the opposition on several occasions. Maria’s tenacious tagging saved us a number of times. Philip was great in support and showed some excellent tagging skills.
Leo’s weaving runs continually mesmerised the opposition and helped set up some of our best attacking plays. Jacob’s enthusiasm was infectious and he helped set the tempo for the team. Eva’s organisational skills gelled the team together both in defence and attack. Felix showed all the skills that will make a flying winger in the future. Will P’s quick feet and ability to spot a gap set up at least 3 scores for us.
A brilliant effort from all concerned, you did yourselves and the club proud! Well done!! Thanks also to all the parents who helped out on the day, we couldn’t have done it without you.
