Under 8s victorious at Mini’s Festival

This Sunday London Scottish U8s faced their biggest challenge of the season. The pressure was on the whole year leading up to the tournament that was to be played on home turf. Would they fail like England did in this year’s World Cup or would they triumph under immense pressure like New Zealand 4 years ago.

Fielding two teams, the B’s and the development. The B’s got off to the best of starts, a fantastic 1-0 victory, recording the team’s first shut out of the year. There is a saying in the NFL that defence wins championships – if this is the case in rugby, the B’s were surely going all the way.

The development squad got off to a solid start but just fell short in their two pool games, meaning they qualified for the bowl competition. After a strong showing in their semi-final where some of the finest rugby ever to be played at the Richmond Athletic Ground, they qualified for the final.

The B’s lost their second pool game meaning they qualified for the plate tournament. Like the development squad they left their best for the semi’s overcoming a strong Regents park team.

With both our teams making their finals the crowds started to grow along with the anticipation. The B’s were first up against tournament pre-favourites the London Wasps.

LS went up within the first few seconds of the game but were unfortunately out done by a couple of slick plays by the Wasps and lost 3-1 in one of the tenses finals in U8 history. With all the fans now around the development game and with our last chance of silverware, nerves were clear before the start of the game. However, as soon as the team stepped on the field they stood 10 feet tall. With the passion of the Scottish the hard tacking of the Springbok and the flair and skill of the All Blacks, the opposition stood no chance and London Scottish came out victorious to win 6-3. The champs were crowned U8 development bowl champions for the first time!
