The club has an exciting opportunity available, with the vacancy of Head of Medical Services.
The Head of Medical Services (HOMS) will be responsible for implementing and coordinating the medical provision for all players.
The HOMS will co-ordinate all aspects of care including working closely with the team doctor on all medical related matters as well as with other medical staff on musculoskeletal issues.
The HOMS will also be responsible for bridging the gap between the medical and other management teams, communicating all matters effectively.
Key Performance Indicators:
- To work within the allocated medical budget
- To successfully manage all senior contracted first-team players’ medical needs
- Compliant in the quarterly in-house documentation audits
- Overall compliancy with the RFU minimum standards criteria audit
- To effectively develop necessary appropriate rehabilitation protocols
- Maintaining strong working relationships with all key personnel, colleagues and players as well as outside the organisation, in order to support and promote London Scottish
- To maintain an up-to-date CPD portfolio compliant with CSP guidelines
Medical Responsibilities:
- To manage the medical team staff, overseeing the medical care provided for all players ensuring compliance with regulatory bodies (CSP, HCPC, RFU)
- Provide accurate diagnosis and oversee treatment and rehabilitation of the senior contracted first-team players in conjunction with the Team Doctor
- Formulate, co-ordinate and supervise detailed recorded prehabilitation and rehabilitation programmes for senior contracted first-team players in conjunction with the strength and conditioning coaches
- Liaise with the Director of Rugby and Coaches regarding the progress of all injured players on a daily basis and provide daily squad training availability information
- Provide training and match day Physiotherapy cover to the senior first-team
- To lead an injury surveillance programme and communicate feedback to the other management teams
- Liaise closely with the ‘First-team Physiotherapist’ and ‘Second-Team Physiotherapist’ regarding assessment findings and treatment progression for the players, injury status and progress
- To lead with musculoskeletal screening of all senior contracted first-team players
- To lead the scheduling of injured players as required
- Provide training and match day pitchside trauma cover for the senior first-team in line with RFU medical standards
- To keep abreast of current best practices, maintain CPD and take an active role in the departments CPD programme
- Keeping documentation on all aspects of injury management in accordance to the standards set by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) and Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) utilising the Rugby Squad software
Managerial Responsibilities:
- To act as the club’s ‘Clinical Governance Lead’, responsible for ensuring compliance with the RFU audit process with the assistance of the Team Manager and Team Doctor
- To manage the medical budget for the club’s medical equipment and consumables with close liaison with the Finance Manager
- To provide weekly scheduled rotas for staffing arrangements both in training and at home games
- To provide monthly scheduled rotas for medical placement volunteers
- Liaise closely with First Team Director of Rugby, Amateurs Director of Rugby, Second Team Physiotherapist for handover of senior contracted first-team players participating in games for the second-team
- Ensure all medical staff are compliant with documentation guidelines through running regular audits
- To coordinate Medical & Performance Team In-Service Training schedule with Head of Strength & Conditioning for continued professional development of all staff
- To ensure all trauma equipment is checked and logged on a weekly basis
- To liaise with the Team Doctor for checking and logging of emergency and stock medications on a weekly basis
- To lead communication with medical insurance provider regarding injury claims
- To lead referral of injured players to diagnostic/specialist consultation as required and act as primary care provider for coordination of care
- To conduct pre-contractual medical evaluations of all new signings and relay outcome to Director of Rugby & Chief Executive Officer with risk evaluation
- To compile and document player emergency medical information for handover to emergency services in event of trauma situations requiring advanced care
- Ensure all players complete baseline SCAT5 testing with input to RFU database on CSx system
- Ensure all players are added to ‘The Rugby Squad’ online notes platform
Essential Criteria:
- CSP / HCPC Registration
- BSc / MSc Physiotherapy
- Relevant pitch-side trauma certification (RFU ICIS)
- Minimum 3 years postgraduate experience
- Experience working within elite team sport
Desired Criteria:
- Experience working in professional rugby
- Experience of first-team sport environment
- Experience in leading a medical department

Dependant on experience and commensurate with appropriate budget of Championship Rugby Club
