Doneghan Pleased With Win Ahead Of Glamour Friendly Against Glasgow Warriors

Mike Doneghan admits London Scottish will face a huge test against Glasgow Warriors next weekend but after today’s comfortable victory over Esher he feels the side head into the game with great belief.

The winger crossed the line for the first time this season to score two of Scottish’s six tries in a 42-12 win and despite conceding twice late on, the 23-year-old was pleased with the overall performance.

He said: “It was a good first win going in to the season proper in a couple of weeks.

“We were disappointed to concede points at the end but it sets us up nicely for Glasgow next weekend and gives us a few things to work on.

“They are going to send a strong team down here as they need to be ready to take on Leinster in their first league match, so we expect a physical encounter. It could be tougher than Saracens last week so we know what we are up against.”

There were plenty of positives to take from today’s game but Doneghan was particularly pleased with the counter-attack in the first half, saying, “We had a target to score a few tries from the counters today after working so much on it during training.

“We managed to do that and were pretty clinical in that opening period when we had the ball, so for us backs that has to be the main positive.”

The man who represented Scotland at Under-20 level sets himself high standards and is hoping to hit those standards throughout the season.

He added: “I seem to start every season with a couple of tries and I had a target to score today so I was pleased to get a couple.

“This season it would be good to get as much game time as possible, whether that’s at outside centre or on the wing it’s just great to be involved.”

On a personal note, the Doneghan brothers both gained their first professional contracts with Glasgow and featured in their Academy for over two years, so they are both hoping to get a run out next Saturday:

Mike said: “It will be special for me and my brother as they gave us a break a few years ago. It would be brilliant to get victory.”

London Scottish host Glasgow Warriors on Saturday, August 30, 3pm kick-off before opening their Greene King IPA Championship campaign against Rotherham Titans at the Athletic Ground on Saturday, September 6, 3pm kick-off.
