Greene King IPA Championship round 20 preview

30th March 2016
admin

Yorkshire Carnegie can secure their place in the Greene King IPA Championship play-offs with victory over London Welsh on Saturday after an impressive success this weekend.

The Headingley side are currently third in the Championship and saw off Bedford Blues 35-20 on Sunday to take a giant step towards the play-offs.

They ran in five tries in all in a comprehensive win, with Richard Beck, Taylor Prell, Mike Myerscough, Jonah Holmes and Andy Saull all crossing in the bonus-point success.

With just three rounds of action remaining, any kind of win over Welsh would guarantee Yorkshire's place in the top four, and could even put the pressure on Doncaster in the race for second.

That comes after Doncaster's narrow loss to leaders Bristol last week, with Andy Robinson's side gaining revenge for an early-season defeat with a narrow 31-29 win at Castle Park.

Tom Varndell's last-minute try proved decisive in the success as Bristol fought back from a 29-19 deficit to secure all five points, while the Knights managed two losing bonus points.

As a result Bristol know victory at London Scottish on Saturday will clinch top spot in the league, but the Exiles need a win to keep their slim top four hopes alive.

That comes after they were narrowly beaten 22-20 at Jersey in a thrilling encounter. A late penalty try, converted by Aaron Penberthy was enough to see the Islanders home and they sit fifth, eight points behind Bedford with three games to go.

To stay in contention for the top four, Jersey really need another home win this weekend when they host Rotherham on Saturday.

The Titans beat Nottingham 22-12 at the weekend with Will Robinson scoring 17 points in the win.

As well as aiming for a win over Rotherham, Jersey will also be hoping Bedford slip up in their home clash with Cornish Pirates.

The Blues are currently fourth in the table and would boost their play-off hopes with a victory.

However the Pirates come into the game full of confidence after their bonus-point 32-0 win over Moseley on Saturday.

The loss leaves Moseley precariously placed at the foot of the table ahead of Friday's game against Doncaster.

That is one of two match-ups with huge relegation implications on Friday, with Ealing travelling to Nottingham in the other game.

The Trailfinders were narrowly beaten by London Welsh, 22-16, on Saturday but picked up a losing bonus point and now sit three points clear of Moseley.
