In the last few weeks the London Scottish girls squad with our cluster partners Old Emanuel played a pair of friendlies against Sutton & Epsom.
The first match on 31st January was hosted by Sutton & Epsom who have a well organised and buoyant girls section and are friendly welcoming hosts. Our opponents were better organised from the kick off and playing with greater desire than our girls and soon were four unanswered tries ahead. Not surprisingly this proved too much to overcome but to their credit the LS/OE team dug deep and fought back and once they became able to retain more possession were much more threatening. As a result we were able to get four tries back but whilst also conceding a further two to end the match losing 34-22.
The return match was played on 20th March at Old Emanuel RFC and both our girls and coaches were determined to redress the balance. Ensuring a more active and lengthy warm up routine the LS/OE team really came out of the starting blocks very strongly, dominating possession and scoring two tries in the first five minutes to take an early lead. Most pleasing was the quality of the ball retention and support play shown by our girls and this allowed them to continue to exert pressure on Sutton & Epsom throughout the game. Being well coached and with some great players our opponents remained competitive throughout and threatening with ball in hand if given any leeway. They did score three tries during the course of the game and more were prevented by strong defence but the LS/OE girls were able to maintain their dominance to the final whistle scoring seven tries in total for a win by 39-15.
