Scottish Fall Short in Thriller

London Scottish failed to overcome a 21 point deficit against partner Club Harlequins in round one of the Premiership Rugby Cup. In front of a packed out Richmond Athletic Ground, London Scottish ran in four tries to pick up a bonus point but were ultimately outgunned by their Premiership opposition.

It looked like it could be a long day for the Exiles when Harlequins ran in three early first half tries. Scores coming from London Scottish inaccuracy and the power of the Premiership side. With three perfect conversions from Jamie Benson, the score sat at 21-0 and Scottish with a mountain to climb.

However, the home side built back into the game and managed to leverage some field position. Eventually this told when Calum Scott crashed over for his first score in a London Scottish shirt off the back of a maul.

This was quickly followed by up an excellent first phase try. Captain Dan Nutton put Will Simonds through a hole off a scrum allowing the centre to score and cut the deficit to 10-21 at the break.

Pressure after the restart led to Scottish continuing to have the upper hand in proceedings. Eventually this turned into points as Alex Wardell dotted down in the corner following a kick through which put the Harlequins back field under pressure.

This sparked the visitors back into life and the Premiership side ran in two quick tries to take the game beyond London Scottish in the final quarter. A superior matchday squad and ultimately greater accuracy on the day.

This did not stop London Scottish having the final say on the day with Will Brown grubbering through the on left hand side to score in the corner.
