Scottish Labour Against Ampthill

Scottish fell to a bonus point defeat as the high flying Ampthill continued their good run of form in West London. This defeat confirms London Scottish’s participation in the relegation play offs later this season.

Scottish controlled the opening exchanges of the game, showing great restraint in possession and discipline as they found their way into the game. Unable to make the most of their pressure though, they found themselves scoreless in the opening exchanges.

Ampthill were, however, waiting to pounce. The moment Scottish made an error they were there and as a result picked up three quick tries to blow the Exiles away in the first forty. Harry Clayton would hit back with a try of his own on the back of the maul but Ampthill would score two more before the break as they built pressure in the Scottish 22 using the wind at their backs.

The Exiles, came out fired up after the break and got, what could have been, a crucial score through Matt Wilkinson who carried the Ampthill pack over their own line with a brilliant carry. However, despite having the wind advantage at their backs, Scottish couldn’t capitalise on the elements.

Ampthill were excellent in managing the conditions in the second forty and were able to run in another three tries, despite the Exiles best efforts.

A late effort from Jonny Law gave the Exiles hope of a bonus point but it wasn’t to be as Ampthill ran away to a 48-19 victory.

It was a result that confirmed Scottish’s place in a relegation play off against, most likely, rivals Richmond. They will face the old enemy in just three weeks time at the RAG in what is going to be a tantalising clash.
