Match Report: London Scottish Lions 30 – 6 London Irish Wild Geese
The eagerly anticipated top-of-the-table clash between the London Scottish Lions and London Irish Wild Geese delivered everything promised and more. In a match that carried the names of rugby history with both clubs’ professional roots, the Lions and Wild Geese faced off for the first time in what proved to be a bruising, hard-fought battle.
From the outset, both teams brought immense physicality, with forwards hammering into defensive walls and backs attempting to exploit any sliver of space. The opening 30 minutes saw both sides create line breaks that had supporters on the ‘edge of their seats’, but only Jem Edwards managed to cross the whitewash for the Lions in the 14th minute.
The Lions’ defensive effort in the first half was remarkable, especially during a sustained 20-minute siege from London Irish, who could only register two penalties for their efforts. It was a testament to the Lions’ discipline and determination that their try line remained intact.
Half-Time: London Scottish Lions 11 – 6 London Irish Wild Geese
As the second half began, the game started to open up. The Lions struck early, with Cameron McMillan marking his return from a long-term Achilles injury with a fantastic try just three minutes into the half. Moments later, Tye James added another try in the 45th minute, converting it himself to give the Lions a commanding 23-6 lead. The Wild Geese’s task was made even harder when they were reduced to 14 men following a yellow card.
Despite the scoreline, London Irish Wild Geese showed incredible heart. For nearly 20 minutes in the final quarter, they launched wave after wave of attacks on the Lions’ try line. The Lions’ defence, however, stood tall, repelling everything thrown at them with a level of resilience that drew admiration from the supporters.
After weathering the storm, the Lions delivered the final blow in the 72nd minute. Fabian Thwaites secured the bonus point with a well-earned try, and Tye James added the conversion to seal a memorable 30-6 victory for the Lions.
This was the most physical match of the Lions’ season—and arguably the past few years. Both sides left everything on the field, and there will undoubtedly be plenty of sore bodies after such a bruising encounter. Compliments to London Irish Wild Geese for an incredibly competitive game; their efforts have undoubtedly marked them as a side to watch in the coming rounds.
For the Lions, this victory cements their position at the top of the table, while the Wild Geese slip to 5th. However, with their quality, it won’t be long before they’re back in the mix at the summit.
