Under 12s defeat Wasps to win Vase at Middlesex Tournament

The Under 12s had two matches in the Vase competition, which were determined by their final league position.

First up were Ealing B – early nerves were blown away as the boys quickly got into a good rhythm and played with pace.  Melvin started the scoring, collecting a kick through the defence from Christopher to go over.  Nathaniel got in on the action quickly using his pace out wide, followed quickly by a try down the blind side after Jude switched play cleverly at the base of the scrum.

Final try of the half went to Barney after collecting a flat pass at pace from Ralph.  Christopher converted all the scores so LS held a healthy lead at half time – 24 – 0.  Costly though – both Joe and William injured – sadly the end of the tournament for both.

Ealing regrouped and started well in the second half – but LS responded well and added a further three scores – two for Nathaniel and one for Jacob, who powered after some strong running from Seb.   Christopher completed the rout with a 100% conversion record – final score 49 – 0.

We were in the ‘Vase’ Final playing Wasps B, who had just beaten Saracens B in a tight low scoring game.

This was a tough game – both teams going toe to toe, the rucks and mauls fiercely contested.  No clear advantage for either team in the first 5-10 minutes.  LS drew first blood with a rampaging run from Sammy who crashed over to score from 10 yards – yes Dan Cole if you can do it – so can Sammy!!

Our heads were up but a further try disallowed for being held up. Wasps then responded – strongly – pegging us back with some good kicking then taking the ball through multiple phases – pushing the ball from one side of the pitch, then the other.  They levelled the score with some powerful running through the line to touch down in the corner.

Half time 7-7

All to play for – which team would step up a gear ?

LS started strongly, a second try disallowed – this time for an infringement – fair enough – but would it this cost us?  No chance, the boys were on it – third time lucky Nathaniel made an excellent run, Melvin collecting the off load to complete the run over the last 15 m to put the ball down.

Not time to celebrate yet – concentration needed.  Wasps came again, we won a scrum deep in our own half, Eddie firmly hooking the ball back to secure possession, the ball then flying through the three quarters at pace until Barney spotted a gap – put the foot on the gas and broke their line – out sprinting the covering defence – great try.

Nathaniel completed the scoring and Christopher kept up the 100% conversion rate

Final score 28 – 7.

Well done to the boys – a thoroughly deserved victory in a tournament that matters.  Some great rugby.
