What will you be wearing underneath yours?

22nd November 2010

With little under two weeks left until the inaugural Watches of Switzerland St Andrews Day Dinner and Dance, the organisation dedicated to the tradition of the Scottish national dress has declared the practice of wearing no underwear beneath a kilt to be “childish and unhygienic”.

Director of the Scottish Tartans Authority (STA) Brian Wilton said it was “common sense and decency” to wear the same under a kilt as under trousers.

He said: “The idea that you are not a real Scot unless you are bare under your kilt should be thrown into the same bin as the idea that you’re not a real Scot unless you put salt on your porridge.”

This however, has caused quite a storm with Scots and divided opinion all over. Former Formula One racing driver David Coulthard said he was proud to wear his kilt like a true Scotsman, “There is nothing childish or unhygienic about it.”

The question on everyone’s lips at London Scottish is – What will you be wearing underneath yours?
