Words from the Pride – Cornish Pirates

Welcome to this week’s Words from the Pride where we dig deep into the London Scottish squad and their thoughts on a trip down to Cornwall and what the challenge of a big travelling week can do to the squad as well as the disruption of moving to a new ground and change of date of the game.

Joe Gray cut and excited figure this week ahead of the chance for the squad to spend some quality time together.

“It’s been a strange week preparing for this one, it’s obviously been really tough for Pirates having to find a new ground and all the disruption that comes with that so our thoughts go out to them and hopefully the two sides and put on a good show at Cambourne to show what Champ rugby is all about.

Honestly, the chance to go down as a group, spend all of Saturday and Sunday together is a great opportunity, we have limited time together and getting that chance to bond and get to know each other better is brilliant.”

Speaking on last week’s performance Joe was keen to point out how pleasing the win was but how much more there is to come from his side.

“To get the five points was massive, it felt like a must win game to be honest so we are glad to get through that and be on the up. We’ve now won three out of the last four games which puts us on a good course but we have some big challenges to come and a lot of injuries now in the squad to contend with.

However, that brings opportunities, Guy [Rogers] came in for his debut last week and was amazing, he’s a young lad with a lot of potential and it’s great to see him take to Champ rugby like that. Two tries, but some amazing work in the kick chase and getting the ball back for us. I can’t wait to see him kick on this weekend.”

Pirates will set a stern test of the Scots, a side that they have only beaten once in the last three and a half seasons and not in Cornwall for some years. Gray put his thoughts on how they can be beaten.

“Pirates are a really physical side and always have been, when we’ve had success against them we’ve matched that physicality and that’s what we are going to have to do again. It sounds simple but it’s a big challenge against a strong side, if we can do that and get parity at set-piece time I think we’ll be in a good spot.”
